Guidance lessons for schools
Research shows that guidance lessons can be a vital service for schools as students and their families often reach out to the school for guidance and advocacy. Many students face personal and developmental challenges which are unique to their stage of life. Some students are faced with complex social issues and depend on the adults in the school community to provide safety and protection, as well as to help them meet educational and developmental milestones. Primary school can be the perfect opportunity to proactively remove barriers to learning and to promote academic achievement; intervention can also make a positive impact in later school years.
Support is provided to school staff by assisting with classroom management techniques and the development of programmes to improve mental health or school safety. When necessary, I may also intervene in a disrupted learning environment.
Guidance lesson topics are planned following initial visits to the school, discussion with teachers and parents and can be generated using the issues and concerns addressed in the previous school year’s plan. Guidance lessons can be based on the needs of target populations or on a survey of students, parents, or teachers.
Examples of classroom guidance lessons include:
- Conflict resolution strategies
- Anti Bullying including cyber bullying
- Emotional Regulation
- Calming down strategies
- Dealing with feelings and emotions
- Building self esteem
